Фейк это подделка , в самом широком смысле. Английское слово Fake произносится как «фэйк» и переводится «поддельный, фальшивый». Оно может также быть и глаголом: to fake passion (изображать поддельную страсть) или существительным it"s a fake (это подделка).
Кого и что сегодня называют «фейками»:
1) Фотографии, подделанные в фотошопе, а иногда и видеоролики, смонтированные в видеоредакторе, либо снятые совсем в другое время и в другом месте.
2) Фальшивые новости, которые не все способны отличить от правды (то, что раньше называлось «газетными утками», а сегодня иногда именуется «вбросами»).
Фейками могут называться также фальшивые аккаунты в твиттере, такие как «Перзидент России» и прочие, заведённые не теми людьми, от имени которых ведутся. Для борьбы с фейками администрация Твиттера даже ввела практику верификации пользователя, так что если возле имени стоит синенькая галочка, то это реальный человек. Чтобы отличить фейк от настоящего, иногда нужен некоторый опыт, помимо наличия мозгов.

Существуют мошеннические приёмы использования фейков. Так, например, владельцы мошеннического сайта могут разместить на нём десятки фальшивых комментариев от несуществующих «пользователей» с восторженными «отзывами», с целью заманить наивных людей скачать вирус или отправить СМС на короткий номер стоимостью 300 рублей.
Мастерами фейковых новостей в Рунете считаются fognews и хобости. А ещё в Рунете когда-то был прекрасный сайт со смешными фейковыми новостями по говорящему адресу Lapsha.ru, но с годами канул в Лету.
